Water Main Fix

As some residents may already know, there is a water main break on Snowflake Crescent.

This is being fixed today and while we hope to isolate the affected pipe, this may not be possible and we may need to shutdown the whole of the drinking water system for a portion of the day. We will take every measure to avoid this inconvenience, if possible.

In the event that we are able to isolate the affected pipe, the homes that will temporarily lose access to drinking water will be limited to all residents on Snowflake Crescent.

Work on the repair will take place within the next hour.

We apologize for any inconvenience and for the short notice. Our crew will strive to complete the work as quickly as possible to minimize impact on residents.

Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.

Operations Update

Hemlock Valley Utilities has been working diligently over the past months to improve our systems, personnel, and reporting processes. The entire utility team has been completely revamped, with operators now trained and certified under EOCP standards. A Class IV EOCP-certified operator with decades of combined team experience now leads the wastewater treatment program.

We have come to understand that there has been a lack of communication between Hemlock Valley Utilities and the community in the past. Our new team seeks to remediate this issue by sharing not just emergency notifications, but also non-emergency updates on any improvements made or issues faced by our systems. It’s important that residents are given the chance to celebrate the positive developments too, rather than only receiving word when things have gone wrong.

We are actively making significant investments in our team and infrastructure to ensure our systems meet and exceed our permit standards. In the past two months alone, this has included a new pump in our lift station, a new flow meter for treatment operations, and repairs on multiple points in our discharge force main. This next month, a new fence for our treatment lagoons will also be installed.

Many more improvements are in the planning stages, with no issue too big or too small to consider. Moving forward, new maintenance plans are being drawn up to improve the reliability of our equipment all year round and to ensure that every step of the process is maintained in good working condition.

Our team reports regularly to Fraser Health, the FVRD, the Ministry of Environment, and Provincial and Federal regulators to ensure our systems and practices meet the highest standards.

We will remain diligent in our testing, treatment, and reporting as we continue to improve and update our infrastructure.

Thank you for your understanding as we move forward with accountability, stewardship, and transparency at the core of our operations.

Notice of Hydrant Flushing

This notification is to inform you that community-wide hydrant flushing will be taking place from Dec 9th to Dec 12th (Tuesday – Friday), between the hours of 9 am to 4 pm.

Please do not use water in your homes for this short time period, as using the water during flushing may cause poor aesthetic quality water to enter your home. E.g. silt, colouration, etc. While this water is not harmful to your health, it is an unpleasant and avoidable circumstance in regards to water taste / use.

This is a planned annual maintenance procedure to maintain the good working condition of our drinking water distribution line.

Annual hydrant flushing is necessary to clear out the sediment and debris that naturally builds up in water distribution pipes over time. This is accomplished by strategically manipulating fire hydrants and valves to force water at high velocities through the system from previously flushed sections of pipe.

Flushing helps to improve water quality and increases the life of system components such as pressure reducing valves and line valves. Flushing also helps to identify weak or problem areas in the system, which can help avoid costly repairs.

After flushing in your neighborhood, you may experience a short and temporary period of low water pressure and/or discolored water. Although the water may appear, taste, or smell unpleasant, it is only an unfortunate aesthetic quality and is not harmful to human health. This is caused by the stirring up of organic particles and poses no threat. We maintain a chlorine residual in our systems that kills and inactivates any pathogens, as per regulation, keeping our water safe to drink.

If discoloration does occur, it can be remediated by running a cold water tap nearest to where the water line enters your home until the water runs clear. As well, tap or jug filters are also effective in helping remove the colour.

When it comes to the quality of the water as it pertains to human health, staff regularly sample water from the distribution system to ensure that water is safe for human consumption. This sampling practice is regulated by and reported to Fraser Health.

Thank you for your patience at this time, as we understand the great inconvenience this poses for homeowners and visitors alike. With ski season upon us, it’s important to complete this maintenance ahead of the busy season. Our team will strive to complete the procedure as quickly as possible to minimize the impact on residents.

The day of the flushes, we will send an email out to inform you that we will be starting the flush within a half hour, as well as an email to inform you that the flushing for the day has completed.

Thank you very much for bearing with us through this procedure as we strive to improve our infrastructure and systems.

Drinking Water Update – Test Results Clear

Due to recent concerns brought forward by homeowners, a third-party testing facility conducted a series of tests on the drinking water conditions in the resort area.

We are pleased to confirm that all tests have come back clear—there are no issues with the condition of the drinking water.

The test results have also been reviewed by FVRD Health Inspectors, who are in agreement with the findings.

We appreciate the community’s diligence and will continue to prioritize transparency and water safety at Hemlock Valley.

HEMLOCK VALLEY WATER RESTRICTIONS – MAY 20, 2024

WATER RESTRICTION IN EFFECT FOR HEMLOCK VALLEY EFFECTIVE MAY 20, 2024

Water use restrictions are now in effect for all users of the Hemlock Valley water system due to our very limited water supply. To avoid potential shortages, the following activities are prohibited until further notice:

  • Lawn watering or irrigation
  • Dust control efforts for roads and driveways
  • Filling of swimming pools
  • Washing vehicles or building exteriors with a pressure washer or hose

Here are several effective ways to conserve water:

  • Only change hot tub water when necessary and consider short showers with water-saving heads
  • Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Use a timer to prevent taps from running unintentionally
  • Water plants only when needed, preferably early in the morning or later in the evening to reduce evaporation
  • Regularly check for and repair any leaks on your property

Non-compliance with these restrictions may result in a $50 fine per violation.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY AND WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED

To Hemlock Utilities Customers

Please be aware that effective October 10th, 2023 at 10:30am Fraser Health has authorized the lifting of the Boil Water Advisory for Hemlock Valley.  It is recommended that you run any faucet used for drinking water for up to 2-3 minutes before using for drinking.

We are also happy to report that the water levels in our reservoir have been holding near the top of the reservoir.  Therefore, we are lifting the Water Restrictions.  We ask that everyone please still respect that we are located at the top of a hill that we have limited water resources.  The team will be watching levels and may reinstate the restrictions if necessary.

An update on the well project.  The volume test has been completed, confirming the well should be a reliable source of water that can assist in supplying water to the village.  Engineering, licensing and permits are in process.

Thank you for your support,
